Miley Cyrus Then And Now: From Disney To 'Bangerz'

Friday, 09 May 2014 Written by Rick Martin

When Miley Cyrus made her Disney Channel debut as the star of Hannah Montana, she was a fresh-faced teen playing an all-American schoolgirl with a pop superstar alter ego. The show served as a self-fulfilling prophecy for Cyrus, whose music has evolved in the intervening years from sickly sweet ballads to electronically charged urban pop.

As her Bangerz tour of the UK and Ireland continues, and following confirmation that she’ll head to Wembley Stadium this summer as part of Capital FM’s Summertime Ball, here’s a look at Miley’s music then and now.

Hannah Montana

During her Disney years, Cyrus released five soundtrack albums under the moniker of Hannah Montana, and a live record from the Best of Both Worlds Concert, all characterised by youthful vocals layered over shiny synths and solid, pop guitar hooks.

Post- Disney

At this time, Cyrus was emerging as a talented country-folk musician, covering the work of Bob Dylan and her Godmother, Dolly Parton. Party in the U.S.A., and its accompanying EP ‘The Time of Our Lives’ put further water between her and her Disney image, propelling Miley towards a more adult audience. The problem was, that’s exactly how it sounded.

The single - a cute pop chorus, smashed between syth bass and airy guitar riffs – was too wholesome to convince anyone older than 14 that Cyrus was a serious pop artist. Even so, ‘The Time of Our Lives’ was an EP of precisely calibrated modern chart pop, and if it had come from a different artist people might have taken note.

Bangerz

‘Bangerz’, Miley’s newest album, is an EDM-charged, electro pop offering. The lead singles, We Can’t Stop and Wrecking Ball act as pillars and the former, in particular, was one of the better dark pop songs of 2013, while the latter is a striking ballad that complements Cyrus’s husky vocals.

Singles aside, though, 'Bangerz' sounds disjointed. Further into the album the thin veil of plaintive maturity from the opener, Adore You, begins to fade and Cyrus’s attention-seeking starts to grate during the hip-hop inspired tracks.

The much-anticipated Britney collaboration, SMS (Bangerz), plays as a poor Salt-N-Pepa Push it clone, and Love Money Party sees Miley rap a nonsensical mess of phrases over a repetitive beat.

Nevertheless, the accompanying Bangerz Tour has been highly anticipated by Miley’s fans, who can expect a sell-out show loaded with an eclectic range of Cyrus’s musical offerings and a massive, provocative stage set. Expect the hits from 'Bangerz' alongside a showcase of the singer’s acoustic talents.
