Foxes - Glorious (Album Review)

Wednesday, 14 May 2014 Written by Gavin Rees

There’s little doubt that if you’re a fan of modern pop, then you like your tunes delivered in as slick a package as possible. ‘Glorious’, the debut album from Foxes, ticks that box like a champ.

Having already won a Grammy, for Clarity, her collaboration with Zedd, Louisa Rose Allen can reasonably expect this record to grant access to the same circles frequented by Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding and the like.

Its reverberating beats and background synths are at turns propulsive and portentous, but nothing approaching an edge ever materialises. This is pop music designed to bring together rather than divide and, as such, it is guilty at times of playing things far too safe.

It has to be said, though, that Allen’s voice is beyond reproach throughout. Her performances add personality and depth of feeling to songs that all too easily could have vanished without a trace, their melodies and dark hues never quite able to overcome the production’s all-consuming scope.

It’s her flair for the dramatic that elevated Holding On To Heaven, a track that’s been doing the rounds for some time, and she’s similarly effective on White Coats, which escapes murky bass thanks to an unashamedly huge chorus, and Shaking Heads, a monstrous power ballad.

‘Glorious’ is by no stretch of the imagination a classic; it’s over produced and often formulaic, but Allen has that elusive, magnetic quality that makes pop such a complicated beast. A star is born? Maybe, just maybe.
