Night By Night - NxN (Album Review)

Monday, 14 July 2014 Written by Gemma Johnson

With Voodoo Six and Sisters Of Mercy featuring on the CVs of singer Henry Rundell and guitarist Ben Christo respectively, it’s no wonder Night By Night have begun to make waves.

The Londoners have been a fixture of the European gig circuit for a while, supporting the likes of Europe, Y&T, and Jettblack, as well as performing storming sets at Hard Rock Hell and Download.

Their long-awaited self-titled debut lives up to the hype, thanks in no small part to exemplary production from Romesh Dodangoda, best known for his work with Funeral For A Friend, Motörhead and Bullet For My Valentine.

From the ZZ Top meets Def Leppard swagger of It’s Not Faith to Never Die Again, which wouldn’t sound out of place on a later AFI record, ‘NxN’ captures the sound of a band that has nailed the balance of classic and contemporary.

It’s clear their time on the road has paid off, not least on opener Time To Escape, where Rundell’s vocal range gives H.E.A.T’s Erik Grönwall a run for his money, while Holding On channels the aggressive, poignant riffs of Alter Bridge.

Everywhere Tonight, meanwhile, is a stunning epic, beautifully charged with three-part vocal harmonies, courtesy of Christo and bassist Jonny Thornton. But the best is saved for A Thousand Lies, which has both Christo and Tom Daniel slamming their six-strings and Rundell hitting the falsetto as though each note might be his last.

This self-titled debut is doused in melodic rock and points to a promising future. Night By Night are the kind of special band that only comes along every once in a while. Here’s your proof.
