Wilson - Full Blast Fuckery (Album Review)

Wednesday, 16 July 2014 Written by Alec Chillingworth

It's hard to please anyone in the metal scene at the moment. Hardened veterans sneer at anything recorded after Bruce left Iron Maiden, while the whippersnappers aren’t any better: 'Black Sabbath ain't even heavy, man – listen to some Chelsea Grin'. We are in a state of disarray. We need something to bring the camps together. We need Wilson.

‘Full Blast Fuckery' is the audio equivalent of a band throwing a beer keg through your window, opening up a circle-pit in your living room, sleeping with your Mum and thanking you afterwards. And you bloody love every second of it. These Detroit dangermen have brought the party in spades and everyone's invited - even the guy in the indecipherable black metal shirt sulking in the corner. Even him.

From the “Check! Check! Aaaaargh!” countdown on opener My Life My Grave, Wilson succeed in injecting an old-school vibe into a modern formula with frankly outrageous results. Harmonious guitar lines coat the edges of up-tempo, hardcore riffs while frontman Chad Nicefield roars over the racket.

His rusty screams are like a more refined, tuneful Liam Cormier – you can hear and, in turn, sing along to every word - while the clean vocals on Better Off (Strictly Doods) and College Gangbang elevate them to the level of full-on, festival-worthy choons.

Passing On The Left possesses a blistering guitar solo to make six-string nuts appreciate their craft, but also boasts an unbeatably dumb gang vocal that'll have everyone singing along. There are breakdowns and grooves during Susan Jane and Snake Eyes heavy enough to crush your Nan (who was just singing along) but it's okay – she'll sleep it off.

With song titles like Viking Pussies Fuck Off and the aforementioned College Gangbang, you probably already know if Wilson are your cup of tea or not. Saying that, the lyrics to If You Ever Leave Me I Will Find You are a tad dark for such a feel-good, sunshine-out-its-arse album. But no matter – it's brilliant nonetheless.

This album has it all: the boisterous booziness of AC/DC, some epic Maiden harmonies, enough groove to have Lamb Of God packing their bags and a frighteningly fresh punk edge. 'Full Blast Fuckery' is ridiculous.
