Joyce Manor - Never Hungover Again (Album Review)

Tuesday, 29 July 2014 Written by Huw Baines

‘Never Hungover Again’ marks something of a coming-of-age for Joyce Manor, who have made the leap into the deeper waters of Epitaph look easy.

Following the immediate, hardcore-tinged delights of their self-titled debut, ‘Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired’ took the band in a new direction that displayed their songwriting chops but left some early converts cold. With hindsight, it now resembles a youthful reaction to people thinking they had Joyce Manor all figured out.

Here they have knitted together that record’s Smiths influences with the sort of straight ahead, honest melodies that bubbled under on their self-titled effort.

Falling In Love Again, for example, explodes into a hook that will bounce off low ceilings at plenty of shows this year while Barry Johnson and Chase Knobbe’s guitars intertwine to lead in a lilting wash of keyboards. There is a balance to proceedings that shows a band coming to terms with their competing ideas and finding a way to make them work.

Victoria, Heart Tattoo and The Jerk are as punchily enjoyable as anything from their back catalogue, with Heated Swimming Pool a delicate, heartfelt little indie tune. Each song crams as much as possible into some typically truncated running times.

Joyce Manor have made a bold step forward with ‘Never Hungover Again’, taking on a new level of expectation by signing with an iconic label and reformatting their sound once again. That they appear to have struck gold shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to anyone who’s followed their short career to date.
