Caribou - Our Love (Album Review)

Thursday, 09 October 2014 Written by Huw Baines

How many songs about love do you know? Thousands, millions of them, right? They are pop music's default setting, often little more than confections or emotional wallpaper. Which makes Dan Snaith's latest record as Caribou all the more special.

'Our Love' is home to broken hearts, hearts sick from longing and hearts fit to burst, its lyrics peeking through an intoxicating mixture of club imperatives and subtle, dexterous electronica.

So much of the joy in Snaith's work is in the execution, in the nuances that unfold almost in secret before showing themselves at the opportune moment. Both Silver and All I Ever Need perform the trick early in the running time, slipping between two of the summer's go to songs - Can't Do Without You and the title track - to recast them in a far more direct, low-end friendly light.

'Our Love' isn't a million miles removed from 'Swim', the last Caribou release, stylistically, but it is a more considered whole. Shot through with its stated theme, it's eclectic but uniformly warm, whether it's soundtracking a high or a low.

Another of its great strengths is its ability to transport the listener to different stages of romantic entanglement, from the sweat droplets that fly as Julia Brightly begins its rise to the woozy, unsettling slink of its immediate predecessor, Second Chance.

Snaith's technical prowess is aligned to emotional intelligence at each turn in the tale, producing an album of rare intuition and complex ideas rendered simple through masterful storytelling. A beautiful return.

Caribou Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows

Fri October 31 2014 - MANCHESTER Store Street
