Grateful Dead Announce Chicago 'Fare Thee Well' 50th Anniversary Shows

Friday, 16 January 2015 Written by Huw Baines

The Grateful Dead will celebrate the band's 50th anniversary with a series of shows at Chicago’s Soldier Field before disbanding for the final time.

Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Bob Weir will be joined by Trey Anastasio of Phish, Jeff Chimenti and Bruce Hornsby for their final shows together, which will span two sets a night between July 3 and 5. Anastasio told Billboard:

"I got a really heart-warming letter from Phil saying that he and the other three guys had talked about it and hoped I would do it. I didn't hesitate for a second to say yes. It's an absolute honour to be part of this final chapter."

The shows fall almost exactly 20 years after the band’s last together - also at Soldier Field on July 9, 1995 - just prior to Jerry Garcia’s death. Regarding tickets, the band added:

“In the tradition of the original Grateful Dead Ticketing Service, tickets will be available via a first come first serve mail order system starting on January 20th, followed by an online pre-sale through Dead Online Ticketing February 12th and will be available online to the general public on February 14th via Ticketmaster.”
