Hot Chip - Why Make Sense? (Album Review)

Friday, 22 May 2015 Written by Huw Baines

Hot Chip are here to get specific. ‘Why Make Sense?’, the band’s sixth album, is one that dwells in the early hours, when bodies have begun to slow on the dancefloor. Its conglomeration of funk, sleepy electro-pop and soul is wistful and intoxicating.

“We’ve been staying up all night, been just deleting the days,” sings Alexis Taylor on Love Is The Future, a tale of mixed-up romance, distorted timelines and disco strings. It possesses an almost luxurious air of melancholy, one that is maintained throughout the album. In that department, ‘Why Make Sense?’ is quite unusual. Its world is heavy-lidded and finite, but warm and inviting.

That is possible because of the attention paid to the fundamentals. This is a beautifully constructed whole based on intelligent writing and a seemingly inexhaustible stock of hooks.

Hot Chip are certainly less manic than they were a decade ago, but this air of calm suits them. This is a reflection of years in the business and a canny reminder that we change as we grow older. Here we are treated to insights and influences that the band haven not chosen to reveal previously.

No matter where their wandering muse takes them, the end result is the same. Whether you’re talking the slick guitar lines of Easy To Get, the minimalist electronics of Need You Now or the off-kilter funk of Started Right, Hot Chip deliver with little fuss. White Wine and Fried Chicken, for good measure, is one of the year’s best ballads.

Hot Chip aren’t really ones for the limelight, but step by step they are becoming national treasures. If you’re in need of an after-hours soundtrack, accept no substitutes.
