Four Tet - Morning/Evening (Album Review)

Thursday, 09 July 2015 Written by Milly McMahon

In consolidating his position at the helm of non-genre-specific electronic music, Four Tet has delivered an album that does not take a traditional form, instead winding its way through two feature length segments.

Scattering twinkling, stratospheric, light-infused droplets of positivity, the 'Morning' a-side of his latest LP is distinctly euphoric. The ‘Evening' b-side acts as a lingering memory of eastern themed melodies present on the flip, which are revisited with abstract productions: haunting, trippy but still with clear reference to the source material.

Cleverly playing on Kieran Hebden’s strongest and most distinctive stylistic tendencies, an enveloping, mist-like noise is conceived throughout both ‘Morning’ and ‘Evening’, ebbing and flowing towards a curious, abstract finale. His manipulation of technology - Ableton Live software, VST synths and found audio - is in service to the whole.

By scattering poignantly plucked beats, which appear intermittently like stars in a blue night sky, Four Tet has captured a spiritual moment, one that is only accessible if engaged with entirely from the perspective of an open mind.

With that said, no previous experience of Four Tet’s ambitious work is required to really ‘get’ what ‘Morning/Evening’ succeeds in achieving, with the beauty of Hebden’s production capabilities and his inherent compositional understanding resulting in an ocean of pleasure. Combined, the record’s two sides confidently demonstrate how ambient and techno vibes can live harmoniously, side by side.

Four Tet opens the album with melodically mixed female vocals, paced quickly alongside his own own shuffling basslines. ‘Evening’ may be darker, but Hebden encourages his audience to see the beauty on both sides. A sometimes astonishing album that defies categorisation and asks to be heard, but not judged, this is designed to be consumed on loop.

Four Tet Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows:

Tue August 25 2015 - LONDON ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts)
