A simple, slow sense of ease runs through Mac DeMarco’s music. It’s the kind of ease that would usually betray a simple, hassle-free attitude. But still waters run deep, and stating the obvious is not a characteristic his music is associated with.
A ‘like it or laters’ attitude defines ‘Another One’, the songwriter’s new mini album, not with confrontational intent but a quiet and earnest idealism. He writes about life as it comes at him, with a shining lack of pretence, polish and commercialism.
Looking just as he sounds - endearingly rough around the edges - his work is marinated in good-natured hedonism, but deeply reflective from the inside out.
This time around he continues from the point ‘Salad Days’ left off, discussing romance, love lost and found, happiness and existentialism with straight up transparency.
Slightly more downtempo and perhaps tinged with a deeper sense of melancholy, Just To Put Me Down and Without Me put the push/pull rhythms of the heart to jaunty beats.
DeMarco’s lyrics resonate more fascinatingly here than on previous releases, continuing to appease and appeal to his stoner/surfer type dudes, as well as fashionable crowds and Radio 1 primetime. Expanding his reach further, DeMarco even attempts to create his own take on modern R&B with A Heart Like Hers.
The lyrics are powerful and underline the progression in his writing: “Done, done is all the love, love that I had saved for you. Gone, gone with my heart, locked inside a cage for you. And once thus that has become, has become of poor old me. Tried so hard to believe in something that will never be, never be.” He’s happy to experiment with vocal melodies, trying out styles and progressing new ideas of himself as an artist. It works.
Identifiable as the wild haired, dungareed, chain smoking, blue eyed boy from the album cover, the bubbling tragedy underpinning his music, most specifically on ‘Another One’, is the fear of love leaving. Whatever depths gave rise to this LP, Mac’s accessibility maintains a distinctly cool vibe, free from the manufactured sense of materialism that usually accompanies the upper tiers. ‘Another One’ is a perfect romantic summer afternoon album, fit to dispel care, worry or time. Mac DeMarco sings with nursery rhyme ease about the most fundamental tides of the heart.
