Rudimental - We The Generation (Album Review)

Wednesday, 07 October 2015 Written by Milly McMahon

Rudimental write powerful, anthemic pop hymns. Two years on from their breakthrough first album, there is an expectation on their music to deliver epiphanies amid massive chorus drops. ‘We Are The Generation’ does exactly that.

Featuring an impressive array of vocalists - including Ella Eyre, MNEK, Lianne La Havas, Ed Sheeran and the late, great Bobby Womack - each track plays out like it would be at home on a greatest hits collection.

Steering clear of the low-brow EDM vibe that the band had previously been associated with, the ‘We Are The Generation’ is more of romantic manifesto. A powerful call to self empowerment, the lyrics running throughout speak of deep feelings, strength, confidence and heartfelt certainty.

Never Let You Go, Love Ain't Just A Word and Lay It All On Me speak of unfettered optimism. Each track’s fast-moving bassline and exhilarating sentiment could soundtrack the final scene in a blockbuster action thriller or romantically-charged love story.

Their music takes entertainment seriously, with an arena-specific sound that has clearly evolved from the band’s plentiful experience playing to vast festival crowds.

Womack’s New Day is the highlight. Pieced together from an a capella vocal recorded before his death last summer, the track is a beautiful finale to a wonderfully optimistic compendium of vocalists. Album opener I Will For Love, which features Will Heard, draws influence from old school drum and bass, realising a sense of anarchist passion that delivers spine-chilling euphoria and brave, fulminating lyrics: “And even if our world is done and the sky is falling down, it won’t even matter to us.”

Where drum and bass is more usually associated with hedonism, Rudimental illuminate a sense of hope, pairing poetry with fidgeting beats. ‘We The Generation’ is full of positive messages and avoids becoming patronising thanks to its natural delivery and intelligence. Sign up for good vibes and smile-inducing rhythmic movements.
