Modern Baseball - MOBO Presents: The Perfect Cast EP (Album Review)

Thursday, 05 November 2015 Written by Jennifer Geddes

Back in August, Modern Baseball cancelled a run of shows to allow co-frontman Brendan Lukens time to deal with his depression. A few months later and the band are back with this welcome surprise EP, which is a selection of new and re-recorded tunes.

Musically, ‘Mobo Presents: The Perfect Cast EP’ is consistent with past releases and finds the band revisiting their jangling guitar melodies and Lukens’ nasal vocal delivery, but as a whole it is bolder thanks to a stronger focus on production and his development as a lyricist.

Alpha Kappa Fall Of Troy The Movie Part Deux (2 Disc Director’s Cut), repackaged from the six way ‘Strength in Weakness’ split, The Waterboy Returns and Infinity Exposed all address his depression directly.

“Hey you, that's no way out,” runs the opening line of the former. “You can't find help in a bottle or a cut."

His words appear dark but, with hindsight, Lukens is reflecting on his experiences and providing greater insight.

These songs come across like light at the end of a tunnel, with The Waterboy Returns written from the perspective of his concerned friend Cameron Boucher, of Sorority Noise, who provided additional lyrics and has been candid about his own mental health problems in the recent past.

The band have already announced a new album, ‘Holy Ghost’, for release in 2016 on Run For Cover and Lukens has noted its change in lyrical content, making this EP both a satisfying bookend and progressive new beginning. It’s a snapshot in time.

Modern Baseball Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows:

Thu February 25 2016 - LONDON Electric Ballroom
Fri February 26 2016 - MANCHESTER Gorilla
