Amy Winehouse/Antonio Pinto - Amy: The Original Soundtrack (Album Review)

Friday, 20 November 2015 Written by Milly McMahon

Directed by Asif Kapadia, the Amy documentary was a work of graphic honesty that unpicked Amy Winehouse’s tragic end. This soundtrack, which utilises live sessions, alternate takes - characterised by spoken interludes - and the music of composer Antônio Pinto, is by turns solemn and definitively celebratory.

Delicately moving and expertly selected from a vast back catalogue of performances, the edit provides perfect insight into the beehived star’s most celebrated gifts: her poetic lyrical abilities and unparalleled vocal style.

The collection features a haunting ‘Back to Black’ album medley, an incredible, and lesser known, 2006 live rendition of We’re Still Friends at the Union Chapel and an incorrigible Rehab, performed for Jools Holland. Body and Soul, her duet with a long-time hero, Tony Bennett, is also included.

Naming certain instrumental interludes after headline grabbing moments in Winehouse’s life, it’s Arrested, Kidnapping Amy and Amy Forever that stack up as the most charged and impressive of the Pinto tracks. Encapsulating the wondrous and naive character of Winehouse, Poetic Finale and Walk mirror her with exquisite polish.

'Amy', with a sleeve that features Winehouse’s eyes peering from under her dark curls, exaggerated by her trademark eyeliner-emblazoned wings, serves as a tribute and a reminder of a tragic loss that the world continues to grieve.
