Jamie Woon - Making Time (Album Review)

Tuesday, 24 November 2015 Written by Milly McMahon

Jamie Woon’s distinctive production techniques and lyrical aptitude feel pure and poignant on album two, with ‘Making Time’ amounting to a subtle seduction through smoky vocal tones.

Blending sensually charged melodies and electronic beats with keys and brass, Woon skilfully picks up from the indelible mark left by the jazz-infused R&B of 'Mirrorwriting'.

‘Making Time' makes an understated impact upon first listen, with Woon’s lyrical sentiments and irreverent arrangements increasingly unique and complemented by turns from Willy Mason, Robin Hannibal, Royce Wood Junior and co-producer Lexxx, notable for his past work with Wild Beasts and Bjork.

Woon has been working intensely on this 10 track compendium for four years, coming up for air only to collaborate with Disclosure and perform at a handful of live shows.

The attention to detail and cleanly crafted aesthetic that typifies his sound is now captured with the kind of fragility that silences audiences. Each chorus is delivered as an epic and the instrumentals complement Woon’s voice like a slow salsa, buffering his quietly uttered words.

Thunder is exotic and the furthest departure from Woon’s signature sound. It is pure jazz and the artist at his most experimental. Forgiven, though, showcases poetic minimalism, using basic guitar chords to highlight the conceptual imagery that serves as a theme for the track. “Wanted to make it rain at the right times,” Woon sings. “For the hours it rained down inside of me. For the fakes and delays of a lifetime. Fill the cracks in a repeat in history.”

With little known about Woon on a more personal level, almost nothing is exposed with direct reference on ‘Making Time’. The imagery, sentiments, ideologies and concepts he presents create a platform that amplifies mood and feelings.

An old fashioned soul with integrity and originality on his side, Woon is an artists’ artist. ‘Making Time’ is an album that celebrates the essence of life, the pure simplicity that facilitates happiness and calms the spirit. An honest delight.
