Ezra Furman - Big Fugitive Life EP (Album Review)

Wednesday, 24 August 2016 Written by Laura Johnson

‘Big Fugitive Life’ is Ezra Furman drawing a line under things. The six tracks that make up the EP have been described as “orphaned songs” from his solo debut, 'The Year of No Returning', and last year’s 'Perpetual Motion People', with focus set to turn to new avenues of expression.

Throughout the EP Furman takes genres that have come before him and bends them to within an inch of their life. Teddy I’m Ready, Halley’s Comet and Little Piece of Trash fully indulge his rock ’n’ roll leanings, with saxophonist Tim Sandusky on hand to counterbalance the dark subject matter with upbeat riffs.

Thematically, the former could be the pessimistic b-side to 'Perpetual Motion People' standout Ordinary Life. “I think I might do something drastic, if they don’t let me go away from it all,” Furman sings.

Little Piece Of Trash is also rife with self-deprecation, something that has in fact cropped up on all of his records to date, from ‘The Year of No Returning' opener Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde through to I Wanna Destroy Myself, from ‘Day of the Dog’, and his most recent LP’s Haunted Head.

When the tracklist clicks over to Penetrate, which sounds like a sister song to 'Perpetual Motion People' closer One Day I Will Sin No More, things take a sombre turn. Armed only with an acoustic guitar, Furman walks us through his stream of consciousness, and the narrative is pretty bleak. "Some nights lying in bed, inside my haunted head, I go some place not like that," he sings. "And sometimes I don’t wanna come back.”

The Refugee, the EP’s closing statement, strays from its predecessors’ insular rendering as Furman pays tribute to his Jewish heritage and tells the tale of his grandfather fleeing the Nazis. Here he extends an already eclectic palette further by placing a dark twist on gypsy-folk, with his monotonous vocals conveying a seemingly never-ending struggle.

‘Big Fugitive Life’ remains a mishmash of album offcuts, something made abundantly clear by the disparity between its first and last three tracks, but Furman’s charm has always been found in his ability to ricochet between styles and subject matter. This EP is no exception.
