Monday, 21 November 2016 Written by Huw Baines

Tributes from across the music world have been paid to Sharon Jones, who died on Friday aged 60.

Both solo and with her band, the Dap-Kings, Jones was a powerhouse performer and one of the great modern soul vocalists. She had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for some time.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Sharon Jones has passed away after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer,” a statement read. “She was surrounded by her loved ones, including the Dap-Kings.”

“She was the real deal in this industry. 2016 you've been awful,” Chaka Khan wrote on Twitter, while Paramore’s Hayley Williams said: “My heart is broken. This year is so sad. Sharon Jones, thx for inspiring me for so long.”

The producer Mark Ronson described Jones as possessing “one of the most magnificent, gut-wrenching voices of anyone in recent times.”
