Chris Cornell, vocalist of Soundgarden and Audioslave, has died aged 52.
Brian Bumbery, a representative for the rock legend, confirmed the news with a statement released to the Associated Press, saying that Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit. The Wayne County medical examiner’s office later stated that the vocalist killed himself by hanging.
Soundgarden were in the midst of a US tour and played the Fox Theatre last night. A number of musicians have paid tribute to Cornell, among them Elton John, Dave Navarro and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page.
Cornell was among the most important figures in modern American rock, helping to forge the grunge movement in Seattle with Soundgarden and also performing with Temple of the Dog, his tribute to Mother Love Bone’s Andrew Wood.
As a solo artist he released four albums, most recently ‘Higher Truth’ in 2015, and later in his career fronted Audioslave alongside members of Rage Against the Machine.
