Vein.fm - This World Is Going To Ruin You (Album Review)

Thursday, 10 March 2022 Written by Tom Morgan

There’s not much to cheer about in the world right now. Our social and political fabric is being pulled apart at the seams. Vein.fm’s ‘This World Is Going To Ruin You’ serves as a potent reaction to the encircling crises—it is a foaming-at-the-mouth rampage, lashing out at all in its path.

While the Boston band’s debut, 2018’s ‘Errorzone’ was an exhilarating mash-up of turn of the millennium hardcore and nu-metal, it did sometimes feel like engaging in an extended game of spot-the-influence.

But their latest full-length sees Vein.fm break free from the stranglehold of what came before them in service of a work that’s as thrilling as it is original.

‘This World Is Going To Ruin You’ jettisons most of the retro gimmicks present on ‘Errorzone’ and replaces them with a more distilled version of Vein.fm’s violent mode of expression.

The band have a knack for tapping into a well of deep, explosive rage and tracks such as Inside Design and Hellnight are bursts of pure feeling, rejecting conventional songcraft in place of a form of savage mania.

These shorter tracks comprise the bulk of the second act of the album, which possesses an intriguing three act structure. The first is built around the metalcore anthems The Killing Womb and Fear In Non Fiction, before then moving into its more compressed and urgent middle. This structuring gives ‘This World Is Going To Ruin You’ an emotional narrative, one that seems to journey through varying stages of psychological distress.

The third section culminates with Wavery and Funeral Sound. These expressive and weighty howls from the void are true stunners, as visceral as they are atmospheric and forlorn. These moments see Vein.fm take a step towards greatness.
