The Hold Steady Share New Song Understudies

The Hold Steady have released a new song, Understudies.

Marking a stylistic change from their usual boisterous bar rock, it serves as the third preview of their ninth studio album, 'The Price Of Progress', which is due out on March 21 via the band's own Positive Jams label via Thirty Tigers. 

It'll appear on the record along with the previously unveiled cuts Sideways Skull and Sixers. Frontman Craig Finn said in:

"This is sonically a leap from any song on the previous eight THS records. Franz brought this idea in and it went to a lot of cool places. I remember walking into the control room to see Galen and producer Josh Kaufman working on the panned bass part that comes in on the last verse. I was surprised and wildly excited by it. We all were.

"The story here: an actor is restless after his performance. He and a fellow crew member disappear into the night trying to find something to help them sleep. The next day neither of them can be reached, and the director is scrambling for a replacement."

The Hold Steady are currently in London for The Weekender, their annual multi-night event for UK fans. They also have a couple of US shows in the diary.

In 2022, meanwhile, Finn put out his fifth solo album, 'A Legacy Of Rentals'.
