 Lily Allen
Some hype is brewing about upcoming releases. Some of the more leftfield artists who experienced a lot of cult success in the past few years are releasing follow-up albums in the next couple of months. Here are the ones to look out for:
January will see the swift return of Animal Collective after their breakthrough album Feels and the critically lauded follow-up Strawberry Jam, as well as the front-men?s successful side projects, notably Panda Bear. This album, Merriweather Post Pavilion (12th), is set to continue the form of the group?s fantastic oddball electronic compositions.
Even more anticipated is Antony and Johnsons new album, The Crying Light (12th) - with the world watching to see if they can follow on from the success of the Mercury Music Prize winning I Am A Bird Now. It is said that this album veers away from themes of transgender towards the theme of nature.
On this date Bon Iver?s attempt to keep his surprise success afloat will be tested with his new EP, Blood Bank. And of course it will be interesting to see how Franz Ferdinand do with their new album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand. The Boss will also be back in 2009: Bruce Springsteen’s Working on a Dream is scheduled for release on the 26th.
In February a personal favourite and all-round musical talent Andrew Bird will release Noble Beast (2nd) with undoubtedly more clever wordplay and soft composition. I am also looking forward to hearing Dent May and His Magnificent Ukelele, which, judging by his MySpace and videos will bring some light ironic relief to the music world, though as one comment on YouTube reads: ?I sort of want to smack this guy in the face with a sock full of change. Get your ironic bullshit out of my face and go watch the Royal Tenenbaums again you affected hipster douche.?
Phosphorescent will also try to emulate fellow alt-folk breakthrough acts, challenging fans to spell his name right with a new album To Willie. This, of course, is not to mention Lily Allen?s new album, entitled It?s Not Me, It?s You (oh, that familiar excuse) which is bound to cause a stir in the UK come February.
Also coming is a solo album from one half of Black Keys Dan Auerbach called Keep It Hid, an interesting solo album prospect. Also, there is a third album from French-Canadian alt-rock stars Malajube coming, one which I?ll be interested to hear.
I?m reluctant to go much further, but Morissey, Beirut, Abe Vigoda, Fol Chen (ex-members of Liars), M. Ward and Vetiver are all planning releases for February that I?m eagerly anticipating.
