The boy-band of popular classical music will be male-diva-ing it up in an arena near you soon. Well, it’ll be near to you if you live in London. The improbably handsome foursome with voices powerful enough to explode a sheep will be performing songs from their latest album ‘The Promise’. Sheep are advised not to attend. ‘Male-Diva’, that’s what ‘Il Divo’ means, that and ‘Divine performer’. In Italian. There’s impressive. The band are the result of Producer, TV celebrity and b*stard Simon Cowell sticking his wotsit into the money-pie of classical music back in 2003. Il Divo fans don’t mind though and there’s plenty of them.
The idea in Cowell’s sticky little brain was that the rift between classical and pop music could be healed (and milked) by the right four with the right voices and the right songs. Il Divo's fourth album includes versions of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ (it’s got the Buckley-style guitar with Italian lyrics), ABBA’s ‘Winner Takes it All’ (In Spanish no less) and Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s ‘The Power of Love’ (Epically done in Spanish again)
The band will be in London on the follow dates, supported by gorgeously skilled fiddler Vanessa Mae and, new girl on the pop-classical block, Camilla Kerslake:
Dec 07 – HMV Apollo, London
Dec 08 – HMV Apollo, London
You’ll probably be able to hear that lot from Bristol. Tickets available Friday 16th October at 9am. Click Here to Compare & Buy Il Divo Tickets
