They made beautiful music together at Madison Square Gardens. It was a collaboration so astoundingly gravy that they got nominated for not one, not three, but two Grammys, which is pretty bloody good. Now, rocking sexagenarians Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton have announced they’re giving their relationship another go with a jaunt around Europe.
The eagerly anticipated tour will start on May 18 in Birmingham and see them travel across the continent to finish on June 13 in Istanbul, Turkey. Both Winwood and Clapton have had long musical careers that have made their names synonymous with the best rock has to offer. They once got together in ’69, formed a group called Blind Faith, made one amazing album, did one beautiful tour and split up again.
Over the years, they’ve kept their relationship as ‘just friends’ but every now and again they can’t help themselves and hook up to get that beautiful music playing again, if only for a night. Madison Square Gardens was the first time in four decades that they’ve had a major collaboration. They’re amazing together but their relationship just doesn’t have long-term legs. This European thing might be the last time they’re seen on stage together… ever.
The dates are:
May 18 Birmingham NEC
May 20 London, Wembley Arena
