Brighton Prepares For The Great Escape Festival 2012

The Brighton Great Escape is just over a week away, and this year’s festival is set up to be better than ever. With a line up that boasts nearly 200 acts, music aficionados are due to be overwhelmed as The Great Escape (TGE) looks set to take another giant stride in making its presence known in the UK festival calendar.

Arguably known for being the UK’s premier festival for unsigned acts, TGE will be spread across 30 of Brighton's venues.

Across the weekend, budding new bands and musicians will mix it up with a select few established artists who are returning to Brighton after they once used TGE to springboard their career here.

Temper Trap are headlining the Brighton Dome on Friday 11th May after appearing on some of the smaller stages back in 2009. Temper Trap said: “We can't wait to play The Great Escape again - being part of the event in 2009 was incredible and 2012 is going to be even better

Joining the Temper Trap at the Dome over the weekend will be other established music artists S.C.U.M, We are Scientists, Maximo Park, Reverend and the Makers and The Africa Express Sound System (AESS).

The AESS will be headlining on the Saturday night and anyone who seems in the dark over the group may wish to get quickly informed. The group are made up from a smorgasbord of artists that are chosen specifically for certain sets. Their sets are critically acclaimed and boast an impressive array of musical talent.

This year’s show has brought together Jesse Hacket, musical director and keyboardist for Gorillaz, John McClure from Reverend and the Makers, DJ and producer from the Boiler Room Thristian (bpm), soul singer-song writer Terri Walker, along with a host of cultural African talent.

However, the main ethos behind the festival is to promote new bands and musicians. In the past the likes of The XX, Ed Sheeran and Bombay Bicycle Club have all featured as pretty much unknown acts at TGE.

With so many acts across so many stages, sometimes the best bands can be found by accident, as you trawl through the city’s many back streets and lanes. It is easy to get lost in Brighton, but you can be guaranteed you won’t lose the music, as every street corner and park seems to have something going on.

Bands tipped for this year’s Great Escape include Jack White signings The Black Belles, We Are the Augustines, The Milk, Peace, The Front Bottoms and Cloud Nothings, although I am sure many more will be uncovered through the weekend
