There are so many great events on the festival calendar nowadays that it is hard to know which ones to pick. Of all the summer events in the UK however, one small festival holds a special place in the heart of its devotees. 2000trees has only been going six years, but in that time has accomplished a steadily rising capacity and increasing recognition as one of the finest festivals in the land. For those who attend this festival year in, year out, it truly is an unmissable event. Tickets for this year’s festival have sold out but, if you haven’t got one and you’re really lucky, the odd spare may pop up somewhere so keep your eyes peeled. The 2012 incarnation of 2000trees really is not one you want to miss out on.
Most festivals are all about the headliners, 2000trees is far from that. It is hard to find a bad band playing the festival at all. Because of its small size (a capacity of 4,500) more focus is put on finding an appropriate bill than just on finding appropriate headliners.
This year it is the turn of electronica/post-rock legends 65daysofstatic and indie royalty Guillemots to head the main stage line-up, ably backed by the likes of The Futureheads, Hundred Reasons, Summer Camp, We Were Promised Jetpacks and Stereoboard faves Maybeshewill. The diverse main stage line-up is indicative of the varied musical outlook of the festival as a whole. 2000trees is not all about the rock, although it has hosted pretty much every British rock band that is actually worth listening to over the last few years.
If you do want rock of course then The Cave stage is the haven for you at 2000trees. 2012 sees the triumph of noise rock with Pulled Apart by Horses headlining the Saturday night, in what looks like will be one of their last ‘small’ shows for a while, and Future of the Left (who, in case you didn’t know, make The Beatles sound like a pub band). The guitars are out in full force further down The Cave line-up as Gallows, The James Cleaver Quintet, Rolo Tomassi, Lower than Atlantis and Antlered Man will be among those bludgeoning their way into your ears over the course of the weekend. It should also be mentioned that the early entry Thursday night includes a headline set from mathy geniuses Three Trapped Tigers in The Cave, ably supported by Tall Ships and Tellison amongst others.
Just in case anyone’s appetite has not been whetted by the immense line-ups of the two larger stages, The Leaf Lounge and The Greenhouse also have plenty of brilliant acts. The Xcerts, Lucy Rose, Johnny Foreigner and Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun are just a few of the artists appearing in The Leaf Lounge. Meanwhile the acoustic-oriented Greenhouse will feature sets by such excellent singer-songwriters as Ben Marwood and Shoes & Socks Off. The level of care and attention given to all the stages at 2000trees, even the smaller ones, belies the dedication of its fantastic organisational team and the true passion they hold for music. This is an event run by fans for fans, without question.
Overall there is something for everyone musically at 2000trees but that isn’t all that makes this festival special. Expect a warm welcome, a fantastic atmosphere and an absence of the scenester vibes that pervade most mainstream festivals these days. Food and drink prices are also extremely reasonable and the toilets are the best of any festival site I have ever been to. 2000trees 2012 looks set to be another fantastic year for the event, tucked away as it is in the lovely Gloucestershire countryside.
