Sucioperro - Fused (Album Review)

Eighteen months ago Sucioperro were preparing to unleash their third album, the instantly memorable and wonderfully melodic 'The Heart String & How to Pull It'. Now they bring 'Fused' to the table...and it honestly could not be much more different. Where 'Heart String' was immediate and often gentle 'Fused' is, by and large, a pummelling half hour journey into darkness.
 Whether this change reveals something of Sucioperro’s frustration at the lack of mainstream attention granted to them, despite having more than enough anthems to rival their close friends in Biffy Clyro, is unknown and, frankly, completely immaterial. What is more important is how clearly it marks this band’s ambitions and intentions. Of course there is nothing wrong with following up your most melodic and straightforward record to date with a searing blast of Torche-esque prog metal, but most bands would not dare.
That is just one of the things that separate Sucioperro from much of the pack. This is a band that cares passionately about the music they create and that are determined not to stick to the limits that most other acts are equally determined to fit between. From the opening 'A River of Blood' and its intense "You fucked me up, but I fucked you” chorus to the lullaby-esque closer 'You Should Get Some Sleep', this album is a rollercoaster ride that only reveals itself fully after numerous listens.
Perhaps there are times when this album would benefit from a bit less economy. The likes of 'Pig Ravens' would probably be just as awesome if it had a four and a half minute jazz freak-out section at the end of it, for example, but to focus on what this album is not is to miss the point. What it is is an almost perfectly layered and composed journey through the outer limits of Sucioperro’s heavy rock spectrum. It is repetitive in all the right places, and surprising at all the right moments
With 'Fused', Sucioperro have created a record that not only flows wonderfully but also showcases their immensely consistent and diverse songwriting. Whether they are at their all-out heaviest ('What a Fucking Chump') or their more subtle and beguiling (the slow-building 'Rabbits in Boxes'), this band are proving more and more with each release that they are one of the best that Britain has to offer.
