According to The Cramatics, ‘stars that shine the brightest are the stars that slowly die’. I have no idea if this is true or not - I’m not Stephen Hawking - but I do know that lots of interesting things are formed in the centre of dying stars, things like... gold. Incidentally, 'Like Gold' is the name of the Cramatics new track (did you see what I did there? I’m here all week), and it’s worth a listen if you get the chance.
'Like Gold' is not a song about gold at all, it's about a withering relationship, or as lead-singer Chris Reardon puts it, "when you think everything is going ok and then it’s over, out of the blue", but to listen to it, you wouldn’t think it was a breakup song - it’s far too chirpy and bouncy and upbeat.
Despite a worryingly eighties synth intro, 'Like Gold' is genuinely catchy once the guitars kick in, and Chris Reardon has a breezy and effortless singing voice that's perfect for infectious indie-pop. Plus, the chorus sort of reminds me of Blue Album Weezer - if Weezer were a lot cooler and enjoyed larking around in underground car-parks - and a band that sound like Weezer are alright by me.
The Cramatics have had a busy year with highlights including the Beach Break Live Student Festival, and their EP is due early next year. If you want to bop your head around in delight for a few minutes, go and have a listen to 'Like Gold' over on YouTube... although if you’re looking for more information on gold you may be sorely disappointed.
