The Blackout - Start The Party (Album Review)

When the title and artwork for the latest album from The Blackout ‘Start The Party’ was released some fans feared the welsh sextet had had a little too much fun in the sun and their fourth album would be more at home in the clubs of the Balearic Islands; but they wouldn’t do that to their fans, would they?

ImageThe answer is of course an emphatic no! With Jason Perry once again producing, ‘Start The Party’ is still balls-to-the-wall rock with head banging drum beats, riffs a plenty and Sean Smith screaming. The lyrics aren’t as dark as some of those on ‘Hope’ or ‘The Best In Town’ and instead capture the raucous, high energy, non-stop fun The Blackout deliver when performing live. As they say themselves:

“It’s about positivity, moving on and getting on with life.” Sean Smith.

“Music can be a great form of escapism and we tried to fully encapsulate that with this record, we wanted to write about enjoying yourself and not worrying about things. Take a half hour out of your life, switch off and hear something fun!” Gavin Butler.

The title track sets the party vibe which then doesn't stop. ‘We Live On’ and ‘Free Yourself’ are for those that like to announce their arrival and be the centre of attention at parties, whilst ‘Running Scared’, ‘Keep Singing’ and ‘Throw It All Away’ are for those who prefer a less dramatic entrance, who spend some time scoping out the room before becoming the life and soul. There’s even a ballad in the form of ‘You’ for those lovers who have found a cosy corner.

Although a couple of the tracks sound a little familiar you’ll soon be belting them out at the top of your lungs whilst your neighbours bang down your door asking to join the party!

'Start The Party' tracklisting is as follows:

Start The Party
Radio
We Live On
Let Me Go
Take Away The Misery
Keep Singing
Running Scared
You
Free Yourself
Sleep When You’re Dead
Throw It All Away
