Zayn Malik, known mononymously as just Zayn, is a singer and songwriter from Bradford.
He rose to fame as a member of the global phenomenon boy band One Direction, after forming for the X Factor in 2010 aged just 17. Malik was initially eliminated from the competition as a solo act, but was brought back in to join with the other boys Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Nial Horan. One Direction only finished third in the competition, but subsequently became one of the biggest boy bands of all time. Malik left the group in March 2015 and subsequently signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records. Adopting a more alternative R&B music style with his debut studio album 'Mind of Mine', which dropped in 2016, Malik became the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US with a debut single, Pillowtalk, and debut album. In 2017 he appeared on the soundtrack for Fifty Shades Darker, and shared various tracks in 2018. He released his second album 'Icarus Falls' in December 2018. Malik has been the recipient of several accolades, including an American Music Award, Billboard Music Award and MTV Video Music Award, and is reported to have even written an autobiography.
