Bilal is a Philadelphia born RnB artist, who bursts out of the seams of the neo-soul category. From a young age Bilal had a deep interest in jazz, and he eventually attended New York's New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he received voice training, as well as training in jazz and big-band arrangements.

His first major break came with the release of Grenique's 1999 'Black Butterfly', which featured Bilal's vocals on three tracks. The following year, he established a deep connection to hip-hop by appearing on Common's 'Like Water for Chocolate' and Guru's third 'Jazzmatazz' album. These recordings led him into the Soulquarians, a rotating collective of collaborators who included the Roots' Ahmir Thompson, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Q-Tip, and Raphael Saadiq within its ranks.

His debut album, '1st Born Second', came in 2001 and featured collabs with Mike City, Robert Glasper, and many of the Soulquarians, reaching the top ten of Billboard's RnB album charts. Bilal was set to follow his debut with 'Love For Sale' recorded in 2006, but when the album was leaked online, the label decided to hold off, and drop him.

Nine years passed without a commercial release until 'Airtight's Revenge' reared its head in 2010 on Plug Research, and featured the Grammy nominated track Little One. 'A Love Surreal', followed in 2013, and his latest, 'In Another Life' came in 2015.
