Boy Azooga is the project of Cardiff-born Davey Newington and his band.
While playing drums in Charlotte Church’s Pop Dungeon, under the pseudonym Bongo Fury, and other Cardiff bands such as Keys and Monico Blonde, Davey began writing his own music and recording it round his friend Dr Ed Boogie’s house. He recruited friends Daf, Dylan and Sam to form the four headed instrument swapping psychedelic dance rock outfit known as Boy Azooga. Their songs take influence from the likes of The Beach Boys, Sly and The Family Stone, Caribou, Black Sabbath, William Onyeabor, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, Beastie Boys, Can, Outkast, Van McCoy, Ty Segal and much more. The band have toured with the likes of Orb and Estrons, before building up to bigger stages with the likes of the Magic Gang, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and more recently Noel Gallagher. Boy Azooga dropped their debut LP '1, 2, Kung Fu' in June 2018 after a string of singles. They have since toured around the UK, played a number of festival slots, and even crossed the pond for shows in the States. Still rising from strength to strength, Boy Azooga will play a Christmas gig at Manchester's YES in December 2019 with special guests and DJs.
