Brother Ali, born Jason Douglas Newman, is a Minneapolis based rapper and activist.
Having grown up in cities like Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan, he was introduced to break dancing, graffiti and rapping from a young age. He continued with rapping, and made a demo tape called 'Rites of Passage' which made its way into the hands of label Rhymesayers. His debt album, 'Shadows on the Sun', which spoke of his albinism, came out in 2003, and was ollowed a year later by 2004's 'Champion' EP. He struggled throughout the next few years, as a devout Muslim, dealing with a divorce and custody of his son. It wasn't until 2007 that Brother Ali made his return, with album 'The Undisputed Truth' which made it into the Billboard Top 200. He returned to true hip-hop in 2009 with 'Us', and turned more political on 2012's 'Mourning in America' and 'Dreaming In Colour'. 2017 sees the rapper's return once again, with album 'All The Beauty In This Whole Life'. Rapper and activist Brother Ali will bring his Shadows On The Sun Anniversary Tour to Europe in March 2019.
