Orbital-Don't Stop Me/The Gun Is Good. (Single Review)

Double A-Side single, Don’t Stop Me/The Gun Is Good is the first new material to come from electronic duo Orbital, since 2004.

Paul and Phil Hartnoll, only reformed the legendary group last year and since then have headlined Coachella and Miami, closed the Other Stage at this year’s Glastonbury, headlined the Second Stage at the Isle Of Wight Festival and have being named Best Live Act, 2009 by DJ Magazine. The group are also set to headline Guilfest in Surrey on the 16th July.

The electronica group, noted for their fantastic festival shows, had their performance at Glastonbury in 1994, rated as one of the top 50 gigs of all time by Q Magazine.

This double A-Side was released on the 27th June as a digital download or a limited edition 12” vinyl. It is a three track medley of electronic brilliance, with the first track a radio edit of Don’t Stop Me. It is 20 years since the group’s debut single, Chime and this new material still remains fresh, it is a sound not too far from the original distinctive sound created by the duo, but still has enough creativity to excite familiar listeners and interest new listeners alike.

Don’t Stop Me is a marvel of big beats, tempo changes, euphoric melodies and fantastic sampling. With a futuristic feel, but also a classic rave ambience the track reaches all of your senses and excels at giving your body, that ‘feel good factor’ that only a top quality dance track can do. Track 1, the radio edit is a compressed version of track 2, the 6 minute long, full version, which is a masterpiece. There are elements within the track all reminiscent of great dance acts such as The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Faithless and Daft Punk, all bundled together into this stonking, atmospheric sound which is ultimately the classic sound of this great dance duo.

The Gun Is Good is another winner. The opening sampling and synths provide an atmospheric backdrop to the drum machine beats and rave medleys that follow. If rave music was dead, then it has just been resurrected, the shifts in electronic sounds throughout the almost 8 minute long track are absolutely seamless. It ticks all the right boxes as it literally picks you up and sticks you into a packed dance floor. For 7 minutes and 53 seconds you are transported away from the real world and thrown into a care free euphoric land of glow sticks and strobe lights. The sound is in parts reminiscent of The Shamen and the sampling on show is exceptional. This is another fantastic electronic dance track.

This 3 track release from Orbital is fantastic and gives dance music a much needed kick up the arse. If this is the sign of things to come, then things are definitely looking very good indeed. Let’s hope that some more releases from Orbital follow this.

The quality of the sampling and effects is awe-inspiring and the atmosphere that the two tracks manage to create, quite astonishing. It has been a long time since a dance track has had this effect on me, let alone two.
