Premiere: Apologies, I Have None Look Inward On Everybody Wants To Talk About Mental Health

Wednesday, 24 August 2016 Written by Huw Baines

“I’ve never been one for talking about myself…”

‘Pharmacie’, the second album from Apologies, I Have None, is a look into the void. It’s a sometimes suffocating record that chews itself up from the inside, with anxiety and depression clawing their way along Josh McKenzie’s throat and out into the world as sweeping melodies.

The band’s debut, ‘London’, was a melodic punk album that descended into violent outbursts from time to time. Its immediate follow up, the ‘Black Everything’ EP, took that anger and peeled back another layer to find empty blister packs and wine bottles. ‘Pharmacie’ ends up staring straight at self-destructive cycles, a pervading sense of self-loathing and, just out of shot, the idea that we can arrest that slide.

“I know it’s fucked up. I know it’s a cold, cold world,” McKenzie sings on Everybody Wants To Talk About Mental Health, the video for which we’re premiering below. The final part of a double feature, following the release of a clip for the album’s opener, Love & Medication, it paints a bare bones picture of loneliness and isolation.

McKenzie, fenced in by an all too common, debilitating masculine response to the prospect of talking things out, resorts to choking down his true feelings. “If talk is the only way to solve this, I don’t want to sort it out,” he yells. “I’ll keep it in. Chew it up. Spit it out with unwanted aggression.”

Discussing the video, the band said: “Music videos are a hard thing to do well. We wanted something bleak, depressing and constrictive to reflect both 'Pharmacie' and ourselves as people. We asked South of Devon films to portray this with little narrative and they created something we are very happy with. We hope you enjoy this.”

‘Pharmacie’ is out on August 26 through Holy Roar, Uncle M and Animal Style. Head here for pre-orders.
