Miranda Lambert - Wildcard (Album Review)

Thursday, 07 November 2019 Written by Milly McMahon

Miranda Lambert's fiery energy and exuberant spirit perfectly encapsulate the best of modern country music. Her seventh studio album ‘Wildcard’ is a confessional, expertly written body of work.

After candidly discussing her divorce from fellow country music icon Blake Shelton on 2016’s ‘The Weight of These Wings’, its successor emerges following her recent whirlwind romance and secret wedding. Compiled with a guest verse from Maren Morris, on the outstanding Too Pretty For Prison, and Jay Joyce on production, the LP’s features are kept to a minimum.

That’s because Lambert takes centre stage to share her truth. The vibe screams freedom and unadulterated self-expression, and she presents her chaos with self-acceptance and liberating power.

Her faultless vocals are stunning, and there's total transparency to her love of a good time, but also the realities of a life lived fast and sometimes directionless.

Dark Bars ends the album, leaving the listener at a reflective place after a rollercoaster of a journey throughout ‘Wildcard’. Settling Down is another transformative moment for the Texas native.

Here she contemplates where her happiness lies, what true love really feels like and the grit of real life versus the dream of a fairytale ending. “Am I looking for you? Am I looking the other way?” she sings. “Am I settling up or settling down?”

Lambert's lyrics are so engaging, and the enunciation of her words is equally affecting. Crucially, her soul is ever-present throughout the rawness of her material. She commits herself to this album with a vulnerability rarely captured alongside such riotous attitude.
