The Snuts - Millennials (Album Review)

‘Millennials’ is the Snuts’ third studio album, but notably the first the Scottish indie-rockers have released on their own label, Happy Artists. Finding that their vision no longer aligned with that of their major label, Parlophone, the name of their new home is decidedly pointed.

Lead single Gloria was recorded during a two week stint on a remote Scottish island and its approach is instructive when considering the record as a whole. Built around a bouncy guitar hook, it is truly electrifying and uplifting, reflecting the direction the band felt they needed to go in. Overall, ‘Millennials’ does exactly what was intended.

All 10 songs were trimmed in an attempt to hone perfect pop songs and, with only two of them clocking in at over three minutes, it largely works. The downside, though, is that the album is over in less than half an hour.

As has become the Snuts’ way, these tracks are reliant on catchy, rousing choruses and enough energy to power a small city. Millionaires and Nova Star are the album's brightest moments, the former taking its hook to another anthemic level and the bubbly latter calling upon classic coming-of-age fizz.

Most tracks here were recorded on the fly as the band toured Japan, Australia and the US and this constant on-the-go environment clearly sculpted the record. The closer Circles is perhaps the only moment where the pace subsides and, like its predecessor Deep Diving, it also shows signs of a band maturing.

Coupled with the label change, this more seasoned (and less politically aware when compared to 2022’s ‘Burn the Empire’) direction is potentially where things will head next for the Snuts. After a hectic four-year period and a prolific three album streak it would come as no surprise to see them let the dust settle a little. So, if you’re in need of a pick-me-up, grab this quick.
