Lil Wayne has long circled the conversation around the greatest modern rappers and a massive reason for that is his lauded ‘Tha Carter’ series. Starting in 2004, these albums have carried a lot of weight, which made ‘VI’ one of 2025’s most anticipated releases, with many fans having hoped that the last entry — 2018’s sub-par ‘Tha Carter V’ — was just a blip. Sadly, it seems it was just the start of a trend.
‘Tha Carter VI’ starts brightly enough. After an arrogant intro track, Welcome To Tha Carter has Lil Wayne sounding hungry and focused over soul samples. “I still eat the rappers / I heard they appetizers / You throw Weezy on a beat / you’re throwin’ gas on fire,” he says, before the run of Bells, Hip-Hop and Sharks keeps the album on a steady and promising course.
But while ‘Tha Carter VI’ doesn’t feature any contenders for a new ‘best’ song in Lil Wayne’s arsenal, it does put forward a number of options for ‘worst’.
The Bono-featuring The Days is a turgid mess that feels stuck in 2009, while Island Holiday is a weak, dated attempt to bother the charts via a sample of Weezer’s Island In The Sun.
If I Played Guitar and Alone In The Studio With My Gun are both desperately sappy without displaying any real substance, and Peanuts 2 N Elephant marries one of the worst beats of the year with lazy and lacklustre rapping.
The most bizarre thing of all is that, for the most part, these songs just don’t fit what the Carter series is about. Aside from Bells, Loki’s Theme and Flex Up, they feel more like offcuts from the ‘I Am Not A Human Being’ duology and it’s easy to imagine a world where a title switch might have alleviated the expectations and subsequent disappointment. All good things must come to an end. If you want ‘Tha Carter VI’, perhaps just listen to ‘Tha Carter III’ twice instead.
