The Beths Announce Fourth Album 'Straight Line Was A Lie' With New Single No Joy

The Beths have announced their fourth studio album.
The New Zealand indie-rockers will release 'Straight Line Was a Lie' on August 29 through their new label home of ANTI-. The follow-up to 2022's 'Expert In A Dying Field' will feature the quartet's April single, Metal, which is influenced by touring and its impact on mental health.
"Linear progression is an illusion,” vocalist Elizabeth Stokes said of the record's title. "What life really is is maintenance. But you can find meaning in the maintenance."
The announcement is accompanied by their hooky new single No Joy, a percussion-driven indie-pop offering that trades their signature jangly melodies for a more aggressive guitar tone. Stokes commented:
"It’s about anhedonia, which, paradoxically, was there both in the worst parts of depression, and then also when I was feeling pretty numb on my SSRI. It wasn’t that I was sad, I was feeling pretty good. It was just that I didn’t like the things that I liked. I wasn’t getting joy from them. It’s very literal."
The Beths will follow the record's release with previously scheduled UK, European and North American tour dates, with extra shows confirmed in Dublin, San Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia due to demand. Tickets are on sale now.
