Kesha - . (Period) (Album Review)

It’s been a full year since Kesha’s Joyride first teased an album that revives the glitter and neon fun of her breakout hits, but ‘. (Period)’ isn’t really it — it has flashes of the energy fans know and love her for but as a whole this is a lacklustre version of her blueprints.

Things begin promisingly with Freedom, a curveball of an opener that starts slowly. Sometimes a patient approach such as this one can feel euphoric and transportive while still going on for too long, but Kesha is wise to that. Once the beat kicks in, it’s funky, interesting and something fresh. We haven’t seen her present something like this before.

Time hasn’t dimmed Joyride’s effectiveness, either. As soon as Kesha asks, “Are you a man? / Cause I’m a bitch,” her ‘00s fizz is back but she also matches the fire of younger musicians such as Ceechynaa and Lola Young, who have both written songs of late that turn the tables on the way male singers have spoken about women for years.

But, equally, ‘. (Period)’ can feel like it’s stuck in the past. Yippee-Ki-Yay’s attempt at rekindling old glories is outdated and slightly cringey instead of triumphant, while the self-referential Boy Crazy is disheartening. Delusional is an experiment that seeks to update some old sounds but the finished product is messy and hard to navigate.

Overall, this is a record that has a handle on a winning formula without really recapturing the magic touch Kesha seemed to possess back in the day.
