Wet Leg’s self-titled debut set Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers on the road to stardom and success in 2022, scooping a couple of Brits while making the sardonic Chaise Longue into a breakout hit of note. Not many bands make such a splash so early on, making their return with ‘Moisturizer’ somewhat daunting, especially given its revamped aesthetic, fresh style and updated sound. This is a swerve in a new direction, then, but it’s an exciting one.
CPR kicks off with bassist Ellis Durand — promoted alongside drummer Henry Holmes and guitarist Joshua Mobaraki from touring musician to full member of the group — delivering something alternately seductive and grumbling. As Teasdale’s vocals begin, they immediately set in motion a cool contrast, her air of carelessess giving off a no fucks given vibe as and as the instruments unite in a gritty, fuzzy union.
On the relentless Pond Song and, particularly, lead single Catch These Fists, Wet Leg are in their element. It’s rough and ready, with an infectious punk riff and heavy drums.
It’s spectacular, immediately suggesting that this band were never meant to sing monotonous songs in public school accents — they were meant for this. “I know all too well just what you’re like / I don’t want your love I just wanna fight,” Teasdale sings. Irresistible.
There is a neat undercurrent of quiet, too. Other standout tracks include Liquidize, which is much slower with a mellow approach that feels confident and pristine, the dreamy Davina McCall and Don’t Speak, a skipping indie-popper that’s alluring from the get-go. Wet Leg have smashed this. Very impressive.
