The Charlatans have been mainstays on the UK indie scene since the early ‘90s, with hits like One to Another and The Only One I Know among 22 Top 40 singles. Off the back of that, the band continue to be festival favourites, but they have been surprisingly quiet of late when it comes to original material.
They put that right with ‘We Are Love’, their first new studio album in eight years. It sees the band sticking to their brand of Britpop with occasional psychedelic influences, never shaking the feeling that they are playing it a tad safe.
Kingdom of Ours leans more into its psych trappings, especially around Tim Burgess’s slightly distorted vocals, to create an evocative atmosphere; there are shades of early ‘00s Doves here. It’s a statement way to kick off proceedings.
The title track feels like classic Charlatans, shot through with plenty of energy and easy to picture being passed around a packed festival tent. Many a Day of Heartache continues in a similar fashion, soaring and anthemic, and Burgess’s vocals sound as good now as they did 30 odd years ago.
Album closer Now Everything is a suitably epic way to round off proceedings, coming in just shy of seven minutes. Built around slightly discordant harmonies and background riffs, there are shades of the group’s early sound in its interesting if slightly incoherent mix. ‘We Are Love’ is recognisably a Charlatans record from start to finish and a worthy return for an iconic group. It’s solid throughout, if not quite a band in full flight.
