Ellur’s ‘At Home In My Mind’ is a debut album of raw honesty and self-discovery, with glimpses into relationships delivered with a sense of individuality thanks to Halifax singer-songwriter Ella McNamara keeping her Yorkshire accent front and centre.
Gold Help Me Now contrasts heavy drums and a sleek guitar riff with some bleak, cynical lyrics that will be very relatable to many: “I think too much / I’m all out of fucks.” Soon after, though, there is something almost poetic in the way McNamara’s delivery shifts, reflected in the line: “The love / We make / Repeat / Replace.”
The superb Missing Kid changes the mood, with its upbeat, jangly sound recalling Sam Fender.
The narrative suggests the idea of being at a loss, with no direction, reflected in its refrain: “And every road road leads me back to this / Every aisle I look down I’m looking like a missing kid.”
The Wheel is explosive and powerful, while Yellow Light addresses her Yorkshire roots. Lonelier In Heaven is much more stripped back instrumentally, leaving her vocals centre stage. Versatile and cohesive, its emotional intelligence and depth balanced with storytelling skill, ‘At Home In My Mind’ is a superb bow from an exciting talent.
