MUNA are back and better than ever. Four years on from their self-titled third LP, and two from vocalist Katie Gavin’s solo debut ‘What a Relief’, ‘Dancing On The Wall’ is packed with hip-shaking beats and jangly chords, switching deftly between high energy electro-pop and their signature indie cool.
It Gets So Hot is an ideal blueprint for what an album opener should be, with its bubbling synths segueing into a driving tempo, its keys almost retrofuturistic and absolutely determined to make you want to move.
As we move into Eastside Girls, though, the sound is unmistakably pulled from indie-pop. MUNA wear this versatility easily, with flecks of The 1975’s ‘80s-inspired palette here.
The highlight is Wannabeher, a riot of attitude, rippling bass and an intense atmosphere. “Tight bitch, she’s the right bitch / Getting psyched, bitch / Start a fight, bitch,” Gavin spits, pivoting into sultry and enticing with: “On your knees, bitch / Better say please if you want this.”
Mary Jane ups the ante vocally, with Gavin sounding powerful yet sweet at the same time. Much of the record has a fast, commanding pace and this switch feels particularly creative. In that vein, ‘Dancing On The Wall’ also includes two interlude tracks — Party’s Over and Useless — which are very effective in breaking up a set as vigorous and propulsive as this.
This is a strong package from a band getting used to delivering in that regard, with many different vibes on show without losing sight of that MUNA DNA. With the band set to have a busy year with festivals and touring, these songs will translate beautifully to the live arena.
