Bleachers, the brainchild of musician and producer Jack Antonoff, has consistently delivered a recognisable blend of pop and indie since 2013. The band’s fifth album, ‘Everyone for Ten Minutes’, offers no let-up in that regard.
Opening track Sideways is heavier than we’ve come to expect from Bleachers, with the lurking darkness at its core a far cry from past hits Rollercoaster or Modern Girl. Th more sombre tone suits Antonoff’s vocals, showcasing a slightly different side to the band.
This eclecticism is on full display on We Should Talk, which employs heavy use of AutoTune. The Van, meanwhile, has shades of R&B with a spoken word edge but is still recognisably Bleachers come its chorus.
You and Forever feels more familiar structurally, really taking flight in its final moments while keeping that gritty edge intact, finding a sweet balance.
The more unorthodox approach shows Antonoff pushing himself — it’s less anthemic but still with plenty to admire in the craft and lyricism. The saxophone and gnarly vocals of Dirty Wedding Dress feel like they could have been taken from an early Bruce Springsteen record but, rather than being a throwaway pastiche, it feels earned, eventually becoming something more of its own.
Dancing’s pared back blend of vocals and acoustic guitars skirts folk-rock song as Antonoff finds a way to bring Bleachers’ sensibility to bear on this refined style. It shouldn’t work but it feels effortless. The album is full of moments like this — even if it doesn’t all work, the risk should be applauded.
This is a more introspective Bleachers. If it’s lacking a breakout smash, it shows instead that Antonoff isn’t comfortable coasting and recycling the same old themes. It is an expansion of some of the ideas tackled on the band’s self-titled record in 2024, full of the soaring moments laced with melancholy.
