Mastodon Announce Ninth Album 'Marrow Deep' With New Single Snakes For Dinner Featuring Josh Homme

Mastodon will release their ninth studio album this summer.
The long-awaited follow-up to 2021's 'Hushed and Grim' is titled 'Marrow Deep' and is set for release through Loma Vista Recordings on August 28. Co-produced by the Grammy-winning metallers at their own West End Sound in Atlanta alongside Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey and Charli XCX), and Coverge mastermind Kurt Ballou, with mixing by Andrew Scheps (Adele, Black Sabbath and Metallica), the album sees the band turn years of personal struggles into one of their most ambitious and emotional albums yet. Bassist-vocalist Troy Sanders explained:
"Bill, Brann, and myself are thrilled that we still have the opportunity to do this, and we've got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with us. That's a magical feeling that makes us keep wanting to go to band practice. It’s reminiscent of the very beginning of our band, where all members are hungry, we're united, and excited to get to work. And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to do this record.”
The album also marks their first to feature guitarist Nick Johnston, with keyboardist João Nogueira also playing a major role. Several special guests are to be revealed soon, the first being Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Hommer, who contributes additional vocals to the new single Snakes For Dinner and appears in the emotionally charged, riff-driven track's accompanying video. It marks Homme's first collaboration with Mastodon since featuring on Colony Of Birchmen from the band's 2006 album 'Blood Mountain'.
The band first teased the album last month with the release of Your Ghost Again, which pays tribute to guitarist-vocalist Brent Hinds, who died last year in a motorcycle accident, and drummer Brann Dailor's late mother.
Mastodon will support the LP with their previously scheduled The Poisonous Weapons Tour across North America this September and October, featuring support from Deafheaven and Alcest. Tickets are on sale now.
News of the album follows the band's short film, The Mastodon In The Room, which dropped last week. The intimate documentary sees founding members Bill Kelliher, Dailor and Sanders reflect on the band's legacy, specifically Hinds' role in its history, the challenges they have faced, the circumstances surrounding his departure from the group before his death, and their ongoing process of dealing with unresolved grief.
Since 'Hushed and Grim', Mastodon released a deluxe 15th anniversary edition of 'Crack The Skye' in 2024 and teamed up with Lamb Of God for the standalone single Floods Of Triton, released in September that year.
