Suki Waterhouse is your classic triple threat — an actor, model and musician, whose eclectic approach has led to her striking a sweet spot between modern pop and clear influences from classic R&B, jazz and plenty of other genres besides.
‘Loveland’ is another refinement of her approach and it’s apparent from the opening track that this is a labour of love and another wide-ranging release. Back in Love is an instant highlight and a fine way to kick things off, with plenty of brass instrumentation complementing an impressive vocal performance.
Any Man, meanwhile, is less baroque and more straightforwardly indie than some of her previous work.
It’s a departure that tests what we might expect from a Suki Waterhouse record but her voice is up to the task and malleable, even as its lyrics about being deeply in love make it a companion track of sorts to the opener.
Notting Hill continues in a similar fashion, with fuzzy guitar solos in its outro, and Waterhouse’s continued expansion of her sound is welcome.
This track gradually unfurls, starting as a soft ballad before some evocative storytelling paints a picture of a quiet Sunday morning in an iconic area of London. Tiny Raisin is another winner, with a strong ‘60s throwback vibe that finds a balance between homage and sounding fresh.
‘Loveland’ works beautifully, as both an homage to Waterhouse’s influences and a collection of vignettes about love. Even with its many shifts in tone and style, it all hangs together neatly. It’s a necessary evolution and one that perfectly intertwines familiar reference points with a striking sense of modernity and purpose.
