That constant pursuit of the undiscovered is what keeps the fires of inspiration burning for countless musicians and, almost two decades into their career, Citizen have always delighted in being hard to pin down.
Emerging from the Ohio scene during the height of the early 2010s emo wave, across five albums their sound has moved through grippingly intense post-hardcore, widescreen alt-rock, garage-laced indie and beyond. Consistently pushing against whatever came before, that restlessness comes to a gentle halt with ‘Halcyon Blues’.
Released via Run For Cover Records, album six feels like a culmination of Citizen’s journey.
Carrying the urgency and emotional weight of their earliest work, but with the sharper hooks and expanded scope that has blossomed in their later output, it stitches every past version of the band together in seamless style.
From the unmistakable emotional grit of Mat Kerekes’ voice on opening track Good Fortune to the grander instincts and lush, layered atmospherics that soar through I Can See You From Here and the album’s heart-wrenching title track, what shines through on ‘Halcyon Blues’ is the comfort it seems to find in its contradictions.
That confidence is what allows the glorious, sweeping flourishes of mid-album standout Always The Last One To Leave to co-exist with the darker, angrier punches thrown by Matador and Smooth Talker, slotting together alongside the towering chorus of Highs and Lows to showcase the sonic breadth Citizen have mastered over the years.
Closing with the cinematic sprawl of Anne, it feels like the product of a band no longer trying to outrun their past but finally understanding how to carry it forward. Confident, cohesive, and quietly triumphant, ‘Halcyon Blues’ proves that Citizen’s refusal to sit still has always been their greatest strength, every sharp twist and turn arriving at their most defining statement to date.
