Beatrice Laus has spent much, if not all, of her young adult life in the spotlight, with her previous three albums as Beabadoobee charting her mental state at different waypoints. On ‘Pylon’ there’s an overarching sense that she’s realised none of those past versions of herself had it all figured out. Nor does this one, but that’s okay.
This is a spiky, often experimental album that drifts from indie-rock to midwest emo, pop-punk to grunge, without settling in any specific place. There’s a messiness to it, but it’s deliberate, as though Laus has made peace with contradiction.
The opening title track is blissful, its softly strummed guitar and floating vocal creating the unhurried feeling of staring out of a window on a long drive down country roads.
Sun Has Set picks up the pace, with its punk snarl and crackling drums, while Write Me A Letter brings in strains of twinkly emo, enhanced by production partners, and avowed fans of this sort of thing, George Daniel and Matty Healy from The 1975.
It’s the second half of the album that really takes flight, though, even as it simmers down tonally. Nothing To Prove, a takedown of fair weather friends, is bolstered by a feature from Hayley Williams, while Turnstile’s Brendan Yates lends his immediately-identifiable pipes to Powerlines. Closer Satellite has Deftones’ Chino Moreno on backing vocals, too, but it’s worth noting that all this added star power doesn’t overshadow Laus.
Instead, it adds texture and fresh dynamics to her own ruminations on romance, isolation, nostalgia and trying to figure out who you are. Ultimately, it’s about being comfortable with an answer that can change. ‘Pylon’ is Beabadoobee’s most eclectic and accomplished work to date, but things will always change.
