Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins To Star In CBGB Film As Iggy Pop

Taylor Hawkins, drummer for iconic rockers Foo Fighters, has been given the role of playing superstar Iggy Pop in a new film about CBGB, the world-famous music club/venue in New York.

CBGB, which stands for Country, BlueGrass and Blues, was a legendary music venue which opened in 1973. Although it was originally opened for music of it's namesake, it became a staple venue for world-famous artists whenever they came into New York and has since hosted the Ramones, the Misfits, the Patti Smith Group, Blondie and many more until it shut in 2006.

Now, it's being brought back to life in a new film directed by Randal Miller and it'll feature a whole load of today's stars playing yesteryear's stars in a nostalgia-inducing feature-length picture.

Along with Hawkins, Harry Potter star Rupert Grint will play Dead Boy's guitarist Cheetah Chrome, Micky Sumner will play Patti Smith, and Malin Akerman will play Bondie's Debbie Harry, whilst venue owner Hilly Kristal will be played by Alan Rickman and Television manager Terry Ork by Johnny Galecki.

The film comes after plans to potentially re-open the venue at a new location in New York and it's first official festival, which you can read more about here. Stay with Stereoboard for updates on the CBGB film.

Setting aside the fact this boundary-pushing release from the Foo Fighters is already being praised and pilloried in equal measure, you have to applaud Dave Grohl. Well aware of the creative coma many stadium headlining bands slip into, he’s spent the last decade trying to make sure his gang don’t follow suit. Such artistic restlessness has largely been successful, so why does ‘Concrete and Gold’ flatter to deceive?
