Jody Watley is a singer, songwriter and record producer from Chicago, Illinois, whose music crosses the genres of pop, RnB, jazz, dance, electro and soul.

Watley got her start on the TV dance show Soul Train at the age of 14. From this, she became one of the original members of the RnB group Shalamar. The trio released several albums and scored several hits including the US Top 20 Dead Giveaway, and the R&B hits The Second Time Around, For The Lover In You, and A Night To Remember. She left the group in 1983 and moved to England.

While there, she recorded a guest vocal with British Jamaican roots reggae group Musical Youth for their album 'Different Style'. She also recorded with Gary Langan, Anne Dudley and J.J Jeczalik (who later became Art of Noise). She had a brief stint with Phonogram Records where two singles were released under the moniker Jody: Where the Boys Are and Girls Night Out. Also during this era, and after departing the group, she took part in Bob Geldof's Band Aid recording of Do They Know It's Christmas.

She went on to release solo albums: her self titled debut in 1987, 'Larger Than Life' in 1989, and throughout the 1990s 'Affairs Of The Heart', 'Intimacy', 'Affection', 'Flower', and 'The Saturday Night Experience'. She further released 'Midnight Lounge in 2001, and 'The Makeover' in 2006.

Awards-wise, Watley won a Grammy for Best new Artist in 1988, as well as being nominated twice for Best RnB Performance in 1983 and 1988 too. She' been nominated for an American Music Award, and for a handful of MTV Video Music and Soul Train Music Awards. In 2008 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by Billboard.
