Roy Orbison, who was born in 1936, and died in 1988, was an American singer-songwriter whose distinctive style of rock n roll, country, and pop song structures and emotional balads made him extremely popular.

Between 1960 and 1964, 22 of his songs placed on the Billboard Top 40, including Only the Lonely in 1960, Crying in 1961, In Dreams 1963, and Oh, Pretty Woman 1964, which was the pinnacle of his musical career.

Towards the end of the 1960s, his career and life began to decline. His contract with Monument Records was expiring, and he divorced his wife. Although they reunited a year later, she was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Throwing himself into work, he starred and wrote films, and recorded a two cover albums 0 both of which sold poorly. In 1968 both of his sons died in a house fire. In the 1970s he recorded a few more albums, but none sold well.

Big stars like Bruce Springsteen and Glen Campbell started covering his songs, and soon he was touring again as the opening acts for The Eagles. He signed more record deals, but again, none sold too well.

In 1977 he became severely ill due to a life of heavy smoking, and Oh Pretty Woman was used in a soap advert, which Orbison felt the financial benefit of during his illness.

Orbison's career was fully revived in 1987. He released an album of his re-recorded hits, titled In Dreams: The Greatest Hits. His music was continued to be used in films, and in 1987, Orbison was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and initiated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Springsteen. He began working on new albums and collaborations with Jeff Lynne and ELO, George Harrison, and Bob Dylan, and became successful once again.
He died of a heart attack after over working himself at the age of 52 in 1988.
